Raccoons are not native to Florida and were brought by people who wanted them as pets. They have spread all over the state, and they can be found in residential, commercial property and natural habitats.

Raccoons will typically go into buildings in search for food or shelter, but they don’t leave any evidence that they were there. They will take the food you left on your table and eat it while you sleep upstairs.

What do raccoon homes look like?

Raccoons are nocturnal animals that live with their family in trees, near lakes, rivers, and streams.                       

Raccoons are given the nickname or “masked bandits” or “wet bandits” because they enjoy sneaking around at night and breaking into homes to scavenge for food. Raccoons live in Florida

– The raccoon is the only animal in North America that has a true ringed tail. This tail can be used as a fat storage device and gives them an extra layer of insulation during the winter.

– They have strong hands and feet which grant them immense gripping power and dexterity to open cabinets and doors.

– They have excellent hearing which allows them to detect prey from underground distances of up to 20 feet away.

Raccoons are a small animal that is known for being a scavenger. They typically don’t have any natural predators and they live in trees.

The raccoon has an excellent sense of smell and hearing. They will generally not attack humans unless they feel threatened or cornered.

 

Do raccoons carry diseases?

It’s a common misconception that raccoons are carriers of rabies. In the USA, only 2% of raccoons carry rabies and where they do, they can transmit it to humans.

Raccoons are also not typically known as carriers of the H1N1 virus and there is no evidence of these animals spreading any other disease. They can be carriers of diseases such as leptospirosis but this is rare.
